Mint Flavor in Vape Juice: The Toxic and Damaging Effect on Lungs

The popularity of e-cigarettes among young adults continues to rise, with mint and menthol flavors being among the most popular. However, recent research from the University of Pittsburgh has shown that adding mint flavor to e-cigarette liquids can lead to more toxic particles being produced, which can have serious implications for lung health.

Using a specially designed robotic system, researchers were able to mimic human breathing and vaping behavior to test the effects of menthol in e-cigarette liquids. The results showed that commercially available e-cigarette liquids containing menthol generate a greater number of toxic microparticles compared to menthol-free juice.

Tobacco Firms Refuse to Help Retailers with Vaping Take-Back Scheme

Tobacco companies are not doing their part in supporting independent retailers in providing a take-back service for used vaping products. According to changes to the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) recycling laws, retailers who sell electrical items must offer a recycling service. The Office for Product Safety and Standards has announced that it will be enforcing these regulations on non-compliant retailers starting at the end of March.

Better Retailing approached the largest tobacco companies in the UK, Philip Morris Limited (PML), British American Tobacco, and Imperial Tobacco, to ask how they are helping retailers comply with the new regulations. None of the companies provided a clear answer.

BAT Upgraded to 'Hold' as Malaysia Legalises Vape Products

British American Tobacco (M) Bhd (BAT) has received an upgrade from at least one local research house following recent developments in the vape business. In a significant move over the weekend, the Malaysian government announced that liquid nicotine would no longer be classified as a banned substance. Vape Prescription Sale Regulations: A Challenge for Public Health Experts

Smoking rates have been declining over the years, but the increasing popularity of vaping, especially among young adults, poses a new challenge. The NSW Health data of 2021 reveals that 11% of people aged between 16 to 24 are vape users, twice the number recorded in 2020. This rapid uptake of vaping among young people threatens decades of progress in reducing smoking rates, and tobacco companies are seizing this opportunity to tap into the Australian vape market.

In an attempt to promote the legalisation of vape retail, tobacco companies are using marketing tricks to influence policymakers and the general public. British American Tobacco (BAT) is a prime example of this approach. The company is launching Facebook campaigns against vapes in schools while promoting fun-flavoured, bright-coloured vapes that attract young people. BAT is disguising itself as a responsible corporate citizen by using the Responsible Vaping Australia website and Facebook page. However, its post, which calls for help to keep vapes away from children, provides a link to a campaign to legalise vaping in Australia. This tactic cleverly evades Meta's rules against advertising tobacco and vape products on Facebook and Instagram.
